Important Links Between Gum Disease And Your Heart

IF YOU’RE LIKE ANY OF OUR OTHER PATIENTS HERE AT FAIRFIELD SMILES BY DESIGN, you understand why it’s important to take care of your heart, right? Of course! Did you know that your toothbrush is just as useful as your gym membership in keeping your heart healthy? According to Dr. Cuevas, “A number of recent studies suggest that gum disease—and other oral health issues—are DIRECTLY related to heart troubles.”

In a recent study by the American Academy of Periodontology, it was reported that people with periodontal disease are nearly twice as likely to be diagnosed with heart disease. Another study found that common oral health problems such as missing teeth, and cavities are just as good at predicting heart disease as are bad cholesterol levels!

While there’s definitely a LOT MORE to learn about these connections, the evidence continues to mount each year. Dr. Cuevas adds, “Bacteria in your mouth can enter your bloodstream through your gums. These same bacteria have also been found to then clump in artery plaques, which directly contributes to blockages as they can then stick to the fatty plaques in your bloodstream.”

There are other theories surrounding your body’s defenses against bacteria, including the natural response of inflammation. When oral bacteria travels through your bloodstream, it can cause your blood cells to swell, leading to the narrowing of arteries and clot risks.

There is definitely a connection to cardiovascular disease and periodontal disease, though the EXACT relationships are still unclear. However, DON’T ignore all the other things that can keep your heart healthy such as eating healthy foods, exercising regularly, and taking care of risk factors like diabetes, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure.

And, since it’s SO EASY to clear up any periodontal disease problems WITH DR. CUEVAS AND HIS ENTIRE TEAM’S HELP, do that too! Early PREVENTION goes a long way in dissolving problems in the future.
